ABC News (WJLA): Van Grack Advocates for School Resource Officers in MCPS
May 12, 2026
7News/WJLA, Washington, D.C.’s ABC News affiliate, featured Rockville City Councilmember Adam Van Grack in a report on renewed calls for School Resource Officers in Montgomery County Public Schools following a series of violent incidents involving students and firearms.
Van Grack joined Gaithersburg Councilmember Yamil Hernández in urging Montgomery County and MCPS to reconsider the current school-safety model. Both emphasized that any renewed SRO program should differ from the previous approach, with specialized training, stronger oversight, and clear limits preventing officers from becoming involved in ordinary student discipline.
The report followed shootings at Thomas S. Wootton High School and James Hubert Blake High School and examined whether the current Community Engagement Officer model provides a sufficient law-enforcement presence inside schools.
“I truly believe that the more we have trusted officers in our schools, the more students will report things,” Van Grack told ABC. “The more students will realize that our public safety officers are there for us and to protect us. And that trusted relationship can make all of our schools safer.”
Van Grack has consistently advocated for a school-safety approach that prioritizes both security and trust between students and law enforcement, while ensuring that police officers are focused on public safety rather than routine disciplinary matters.
