Bethesda Magazine: The Fight to Keep Wootton on Wootton Parkway Continues

March 30, 2026

Bethesda Magazine reported today on the Wootton community’s response to the Board of Education’s 7-1 vote to move Wootton High School from its longtime Rockville campus to the new Crown site in Gaithersburg with an article titled "Just the beginning’: Dismayed MCPS families vow to fight decision to move Wootton High." The Board may have taken its vote, but the serious questions surrounding this decision have not gone away. As I told Bethesda Magazine, “My disappointment is that the board is looking at this in short-term solutions, not long- term benefit to the county overall.” I continue to believe there was a better path: open Crown for the students and communities it was built to serve, preserve Wootton as a comprehensive high school in Rockville, and develop a real modernization path for both Wootton and Magruder. A 7-1 vote does not make the unanswered questions disappear. I will continue standing with the Wootton community and advocating for a solution that keeps Wootton High School on Wootton Parkway.

Throughout this process, the Rockville Mayor and Council, Wootton and Magruder families, community organizations, and other local leaders raised substantive concerns about MCPS’s enrollment projections, its treatment of future development, transportation impacts, the future of the existing Wootton campus, and the lack of a clear path to modernize Magruder High School. I raised many of those same unresolved questions directly with the Board before its vote.

As Bethesda Magazine reports, Wootton families are not treating March 26 as the end of this effort. The community has retained legal counsel to examine potential challenges to the decision and continues advocating to keep Wootton High School on Wootton Parkway.
