Bethesda Magazine: Wootton’s Facility Problems Are the Result of Years of Delayed Investment
June 11, 2026
Bethesda Magazine reported today that Wootton High School was forced to dismiss students early after a burst pipe caused the building’s air-conditioning system to fail during extreme heat.
For years, I have advocated for the renovation or rebuilding of Wootton High School, and today’s closure is another reminder of why that investment has been needed for so long. As I told Bethesda Magazine:
“This is unacceptable. As I have been regularly testifying about and writing about … Montgomery County has delayed, deferred, and pushed off necessary school infrastructure work at Wootton and other schools for years ... Now we are seeing the consequences in real time. These are not abstract budget decisions. These decisions affect students, teachers, staff, families, and the basic ability of our schools to operate safely.”
Wootton was not simply overlooked until recently... MCPS identified Wootton High School for a major modernization years ago. At one point, Wootton was scheduled to be modernized by 2018. Then, the project was inexplicitly delayed to 2020. Then, Wootton High School was targeted as a revitalization and expansion project for 2021. Years later, after additional delays, the planning and construction funding for Wootton’s Major Capital Project was removed from the Capital Improvements Program altogether.
The Wootton community has been waiting for the promised modernization ever since.
A burst pipe and failed air conditioning in a building constructed more than 50 years ago should not be viewed as an unexpected event or as evidence that MCPS should abandon the Wootton Parkway campus. The deteriorating condition of the building is the consequence of years of deferred investment, and it reinforces why I and so many Wootton families have continued advocating for a comprehensive renovation or rebuild.
MCPS should not repeatedly postpone the modernization of a school, allow its infrastructure to deteriorate, and then point to that deterioration as a reason to move the school somewhere else.
Wootton students and staff deserve the modern, safe, and reliable facility they were promised years ago. I will continue advocating for the investment necessary to provide that facility at Wootton High School on Wootton Parkway.
