Fox 5 News: The Wootton Community Deserves the Rebuild It Has Been Waiting For

November 19, 2025

FOX 5 reported today on Wootton High School students, parents, and community members calling on Montgomery County and MCPS to finally provide a plan to rebuild or comprehensively renovate our high school.

Earlier today, students led a tour of Wootton this week to show firsthand the conditions they experience every day, including serious plumbing and HVAC problems, electrical issues and power outages, backed-up toilets, rodents, mold, and mildew. These are not conditions our students and educators should simply be expected to accept.

As I told FOX 5, “the students and the neighbors and the community are fed up. Every additional year without a comprehensive renovation or rebuild allows an already aging building to deteriorate further."

I have been advocating for Wootton’s renovation for years, including testifing before the Board of Education in support of Wootton renovations just last month. Wootton opened in 1970 and has never received the comprehensive modernization it needs. Even more frustrating, Wootton has previously been included in MCPS capital plans for major work, only to have the project delayed and ultimately removed from the budget. The community has already waited far too long.

The opening of Crown High School also presents an opportunity. Crown can provide the temporary space necessary to renovate or rebuild aging schools while allowing those schools to ultimately return to their communities. We should be using this opportunity to finally address Wootton’s longstanding facility needs, not continuing another cycle of delay.

Wootton students deserve a safe, modern school building, and the surrounding community deserves a clear plan for how MCPS intends to provide it. I will continue advocating for a comprehensive renovation or rebuild of Wootton High School.
